Aurora Suryah (they/them) (she/her)-Panelist

Transdisciplinary Artist

Aurora Suryah  (b. Baltimore 1996) is a Baltimore-based transdisciplinary artist and is currently a resident artist within Blue Light Junction (2025 - Present) and a 2026 Islam and Print Fellow.. Their work centers on the engagement of earth-based pigments, industrial objects, assembled ritual tools, and protein- and cellulose-based fibers to compose 2-D and 3-D works that re-engineer diasporic and folkloric elements and applications of art and craft-making as resistance and collective actualization against the imperial depression of the mind, body, and spirit. Invoking the spirits of their ancestors who believed that roots, rocks, herbs, bones and psalms would free them from colonial imperialism. Aurora uses their work to both ask and answer the question: What does it mean to believe in something, and what are the consequences of it?

Aurora's work within Baltimore's fashion, design and craft industry has resulted in propelling 18 Baltimore-based fashion brands to 28 markets globally, 4 cohorts of an industrial sewing training program in collaboration with Open Works and SEWLA

B USA through M.O.E.D. Throughout Aurora's career, they have had the pleasure of creative directing and styling numerous regional branding campaigns for brands like Puma, New Balance and Farfetch as well as collaborating with the American Craft Council and the Urban Manufacturing Alliance to center garment manufacturing in Baltimore City on a national stage. As an advocate for local creatives, artists, designers and small batch manufacturers, Aurora has put 1.2 million dollars in the hands of their neighbors designing and making the future for Baltimore and beyond. In June 2026 Aurora was appointed as the Director of SCRAP Bmore a creative reuse center supplying artist, crafters and fashion designers with access to used and new supplies/resources to grow and sustain their practice, pushing forward an initiative that has kept almost 100 tons of art, craft and sewing materials out of Baltimore City's landfill in the last 10 years.
